Gingivitis Can Often Be Treated at Home! Here’s How
March 13, 2026

Gum disease is a sinister threat that may seem like it isn’t a big deal when it starts out, but it will eventually cause permanent damage such as tooth loss and jawbone erosion if left untreated. Gum disease begins as mild inflammation called gingivitis, and it can often be treated and resolved at this stage with improved oral hygiene habits. Here’s a quick look at how gum disease progresses, how you can treat gingivitis at home, and when you should see your dentist for help.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an oral infection that comes in two stages, those being:
- Gingivitis: This first stage is characterized by redness of the gum tissue supporting the teeth. While it may seem negligible when it first develops, it will advance to the destructive stage of periodontitis if left untreated.
- Periodontitis: The second stage of gum disease is characterized by symptoms like visible plaque accumulations, swelling, persistent bad breath, and loose permanent teeth. Periodontitis requires treatment from an oral health professional, so contact your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms.
Can Gingivitis Be Treated at Home?
If gum disease is detected while it is still in the gingivitis stage, it can usually be resolved by improving your oral care habits. A few measures to take include:
- Practicing excellent oral hygiene: Be sure to brush, floss, and rinse with antibacterial mouthwash every day to eliminate nasty bacteria and food debris.
- Try a salt water rinse: Swishing a solution of salt and water about your mouth can ease irritation, loosen food debris, and kill harmful bacteria. Make salt water by mixing a quarter teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of water and rinse at least once a day, preferably after meals.
- Making smart eating decisions: Limit your intake of items that are high in sugar, acid, and alcohol. These chemicals can irritate your gum tissue and contribute to inflammation.
- Abstain from tobacco use: Whether chewed, smoked, or vaped, tobacco can deliver noxious chemicals that are stressful for your gums. Nicotine also causes blood vessels to constrict, which makes it harder for your gums to fight infections.
Don’t let gum disease wreck your gorgeous smile. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand how to keep your teeth and soft tissues in great shape.
