Don’t Wait for Pain: 4 Reasons You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

When someone needs a tooth extracted, you likely imagine it’s to help get relief from severe pain. While this can be the case for a lot of patients, there is a chance that one needs to be removed even if it doesn’t hurt. If this is true for you, then it’s understandable if you’re a bit confused. Here are four reasons why this treatment can be helpful despite having no discomfort.

1.)  Prepare for Orthodontics

If you want to get orthodontics, then you will undergo a thorough consultation and X-rays. Your dentist will assess what movement needs to be done to get you to a healthier bite you love. However, for some patients, their crowding may cause trouble. There may not be enough room to shift a smile, so removing a tooth can help create some space.

2.)  Protect From Advanced Periodontal Disease

While periodontal disease isn’t an infection in your teeth, it’s an issue for your gums. The pink soft tissues are responsible for protecting your tooth roots and keeping your grin secure. When this condition advances and is left untreated, your gums can recede. This can make a tooth feel loose. Although you may not be in pain now, it can cause discomfort later or be unsalvageable.

3.)  Get Rid of Large Decay

Cavities may seem like a walk in the park with how they are treated. Oftentimes, you can just get a filling and you’re all set! However, when it’s left untreated, the decay can spread across the tooth. It causes enough damage to the structure and nerve that you may not feel it, nor be able to save it. Removing it can help prevent it from attacking your nearby teeth and gums.

4.)  Preserve Your Smile from a Severe Infection

Similar to a cavity, an infection inside your tooth can cause trouble when it’s left to its own devices. Bacteria are attacking the inner pulp, which often causes severe discomfort. If you ignore your pain for long enough, it will go away because the nerve has been damaged to the point where it can’t send out signals. While your hurting tooth will be gone, this is a dental emergency. The bacteria can spread and attack your other teeth and gums. When it’s severe enough, having it extracted can prevent this and keep your oral health at its best.

Finding the exact reason that’s true for you can be done with a consultation. Talking to your dentist can help you learn why it would be beneficial for you. That way, you feel confident about your choice for your smile.
