1. BLEEDING: Following surgery, some bleeding is to be expected.
Bite on the gauze you leave with for 15-20 minutes, then discard.
If bleeding persists place gauze pads or a moist tea bag over the
bleeding area and bite down firmly for 30-60 minutes. The gauze
or tea bag is not meant to absorb blood and saliva, but rather
to act as a pressure pad. If applied properly, it normally works
well in controlling bleeding.
2. DO NOT RINSE MOUTH TODAY: Tomorrow, rinse mouth gently 3 times
a day (especially after meals) using one-half teaspoon of salt
to a large glass of warm water. Continue rinses for several days.
Special Instructions for Incision and Drainage of an
Infection: If you have had an infection
drained, begin rinses today and do so every hour while awake.
3. FOOD: Non-alcoholic beverages may be consumed
as soon as Bleeding has stopped. Food may be eaten as tolerated
once the
anesthesia has worn off. Avoid foods which are hard or sharp as
they may physically damage the surgical areas.
4. COLD APPLICATION: Ice bag or chopped ice wrapped in a towel
should be applied externally to operated area – 30 minutes
on and
10 minutes off for the first 3 or 4 hours or as directed by the
doctor.
5. PAIN MEDICATION: Take prescribed medication
as directed. Refrain from driving or operating machinery while
taking prescribed
medications for discomfort. Do not mix medication for pain with
alcoholic beverages. If discomfort is mild a non-aspirin, over the
counter, pain medication may be substituted.
6. ANTIBIOTICS: Take prescribed antibiotics as
directed. Antibiotics can make birth control pills ineffective!

7. If any unusual symptoms occur such as rash or body itching,
excessive bleeding or swelling, please call this office at once.
